The Quilt of Belonging is designed to travel.

A richly hued portrait of the human family, the Quilt of Belonging is a collaborative textile art piece, created by individuals in Canada from all cultures around the world. Its 263 blocks share the vibrant cultural legacies of the First Peoples in Canada and every world nation at the dawn of the new Millennium.

Over 3 million visitors have experienced the Quilt of Belonging, while its companion book is in its fifth printing and the 48-minute documentary receives rave reviews. Its artwork is used in a variety of projects and education programs, creating an impact nationally and internationally.

Called the Invitation Project, the Quilt of Belonging was created by volunteers dedicating 46,000 hours over 6 years. It involved the volunteers finding people who now reside in Canada from as many world nations and ethnicities as possible. This search resulted in the creation of 263 cultural blocks, arranged on a rainbow background spanning 36 meters (120ft) which inevitably included every recognized nation in the world at the turn of the Millennium sharing space with the First Peoples of this land.

The Quilt of Belonging is more than a textile masterpiece. It is a tapestry of shared histories, cultural identities, and personal narratives from around the world. Every human life has a valued place within this tapestry of humanity ideally symbolized by the colour spectrum that frames the blocks within the Quilt.

The Quilt of Belonging began with a dream of one artist, grew to include hundreds of volunteers and continues to reach millions as its message encourages people from different cultures to learn about and from each other.
